What educational, occupational, civic, and community experience have you had that you believe qualifies you for this office?
Since I was first elected in 2005, I have served on the Transportation and Transit Commission (Chair), Public Safety and Human Services Committee (Vice Chair), the Ad Hoc Committee for Substation Facility Planning (Vice Chair), and the Broadband Telecommunications Commission. I am active in Smoke-Free Fitchburg, Grassroots Fitchburg, and Dane County United, and am past vice president of the Byrnewood Neighborhood Association.
I have been a professor, software product manager, and information systems consultant. I currently serve as a Researcher and Consultant on information security for the University of Wisconsin E-Business Consortium. I've volunteered for the Allied Drive Community Visioning Sessions, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and Meals on Wheels.
In 2006 a sick leave ordinance was introduced to the City of Madison Common Council which ensured a minimal amount of sick leave to workers who worked at least half-time for employers who had at least 10 employees. If elected to office would you support a similar ordinance for your community? Please explain your answer.
I strongly believe that minimum sick leave would improve the lives of those employed in Fitchburg and would not hurt businesses if it was implemented throughout the county or state.
However, such a requirement is not for Fitchburg alone, nor is it my highest public health priority, so I would not propose a minimum sick leave ordinance for Fitchburg at this time. Instead I will continue to work for 100% smoke-free air in Fitchburg and state-wide. I also support county- or state-wide health care reform that provides insurance for all residents, preferably from a single payer.
How would increasing service in the present Madison metro transit system plus expansion to currently not-served cities in Dane County benefit your community?
Expanding Metro service would increase the capacity of our roads, reduce traffic congestion, cut energy use and pollution, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and make travel safer. Because of this I proposed to increase Metro service in Fitchburg by 100% beginning in September 2007. The mayor and council finally agreed on a 50% increase at a cost of $87,000/year.
I also support establishing a regional transit authority for Dane County, channeling transportation funding away from road widening and parking to public transportation, transit-oriented development in Fitchburg and Oregon, and the operation of commuter rail on the Isthmus-Fitchburg-Oregon rail line. customers.
