What educational, occupational, civic, and community experience have you had that you believe qualifies you for this office?

My Ph.D. in ecology and statistics and my 23 years in business (13 years as an owner) prepare me well for a role in local government. I am in my second year as vice president of the Byrnewood Neighborhood Association, one of Fitchburg's most active.

For more than a year I've closely followed Fitchburg Plan Commission and City Council, and I've tried to visit with every committee and commission. I currently serve on the Fitchburg Transportation and Transit Commission, the Dane County Council of Governments working group, and the Dane County United Land Use Action Team.

How will you tap into the concerns of your constituents and encourage their involvement in decision-making.

As an e-mail consultant, I improve communications and protect privacy. Being self-employed, I have the flexibility to meet with constituents and tend to city business at any time. I am easy to reach by phone, fax, e-mail, or in person around-the-clock.

I am compiling an e-mail list for frequent announcements to district residents, but will take care to provide the same information by paper mail to those without e-mail access. I will reach out to each neighborhood association and farm, collecting input, offering updates on city business, and answering questions.

Given the pressures of development, what criteria will you use to balance economic growth, environmental concerns, and land use planning/regulation?

I support the regional design process advocated by Prof. Phil Lewis. I'm working on the Attain Dane! program developed by Michael Slavney and promoted by Kathleen Falk.

In summary, these accommodate growth by building traditional neighborhoods along transportation corridors. They permanently preserve large areas of agricultural land and open space deep inside metropolitan areas, for the pleasure and environmental safety of all citizens. Land owner rights are protected by a "transfer of development rights" program. Taxes are kept low by reducing the cost of city services, passing the true cost of development on to developers and their customers.
